Palladium-activated carbon ethylenediamine complex (Pd 3.5 to 6.5%)
  [Pd/C(en)]

Pd/C(en) is an asymmetric catalyst1) of Pd in Pd/C and ethylenediamine in the ratio of about 1:1. It allows contact reduction of various functional groups selectively under a neutral condition. After reaction, the catalyst can be eliminated easily by filtration. It is not combustible unlike ordinary Pd/C, is excellent reducing catalyst with storage stability and is expected for development at the industrial level.
With Pd/C(en), selective hydrogenation1) of olefin, acetylene, azides, aromatic ketones, nitro group, benzyl esters, Cbz group of aromatic amines, and aromatic halogens alone is possible without reducing benzyl ether2) , benzyl alcohol3) , Cbz (benzyloxycarbonyl) group of aliphatic amines2),4) , epoxide5) and O-TBDMS (t-butyldimethylsilyl) group.6)
