1. N-Methyl-4-pyridineboronic Acid Iodide

Use of cationic 4-pyridineboronic acid catalyst (Fig. 1) as a dehydrative condensation agent gives amides from an equimolar mixture of carboxylic acids and amines.
This catalyst also enables dehydrative condensation of amides in biphasic solution of a low-polar solvent such as toluene and ionic solution such as [emim] [OTf]. After completion of the reaction, amide can be extracted with diethylether and the catalyst (Fig. 1) can be recovered and recycled repeatedly as an ionic solution.
Esterification of α-hydroxycarboxylic acids also progresses in alcohol solvent at a high yield.

2. Polystyrene-bound N-Methyl-4-pyridineboronic Acid Chloride
Polystyrene-bound 4-pyridineboronic acid catalyst (Fig. 2) is a bound catalyst in which N-methylboronopyridinium chloride is held in polystyrene. It is readily recovered by filtration as it is a solid catalyst.
Esterification of α-hydroxycarboxylic acids also progresses in alcohol solvent at a high yield.
