Dopamine is a neurotransmitter present in the brain and is involved in mood, motivation and short memory, etc. It is hypothesized that excess dopamine activity in the
mesolimbic system is the cause for positive symptoms of schizophrenia. There is also hypothesis that dominance of the serotonergic nerve system inhibiting dopaminergic nerves in the
mesolimbic system due to imbalance of serotonergic nerves and dopaminergic nerves is involved in negative symptoms of schizophrenia.
Serotonin-dopamine antagonists are under investigation as therapeutics for schizophrenia.
